The illustrations in this book are not too frequent but they are well done as well. I think that this book is perfect for 10-12 year old’s as this is Willie’s age in the book, and they can probably relate to him. The dog sled race is so fierce and thrilling to read. The bond between Willie, the dog, and his grandpa is un-breakable. This is a must-read as it is so beautifully written and also teaches us some quite important values in life. It’s difficult not to spoil the story if you have not read it so I won’t say too much. There is no arguing that this is a classic story, but also a very sad and depressing one. But can young Willie and searchlight beat Stone Fox, the American Indian man who has never lost a race? This way he can save grandpa and the farm. So Little Willie chooses to enter a dog sled race as the prize money is $500. They do not have enough money to pay him back or to afford the medicine to fix grandpa. Suddenly, a man comes to the house with a gun and tells Willie that his grandfather owes him $500 in un-paid taxes.

They take the sled out into the snow and she pulls him along. Willie builds a strong bond with grandpa’s dog, searchlight. Willie calls the doctor and tells her that he will take charge of the farm while grandpa is sick. Little Willie is worried and thinks that he is sick.
